Fix Broken Touch Screen Yourself

For a while I was walking around with a broken phone screen until I decided enough was enough. My phone was still usable, but the screen was hard to read. I didn’t feel it was worth the money to get the screen fixed for nearly the price of getting a brand new phone. There were a few options out there. For instance some people send their phones for repairs to outside companies that claim to fix it for less than the original company’s repair price, however, many are still expensive and some have horrible reputations. In general there are some things to be aware of when sending a phone off to an unknown company. There are some fraudulent companies out there that take your phone and don’t send it back or claim it was lost in the mail, some have expensive parts inside the phone replaced for refurbished parts, or claim you need more repairs than you actually do. I suggest you know what company you are dealing with before trusting your phone to anyone.

The best option you have out there is to buy a do-it-yourself kit and replace it yourself in no time. It is cheaper, you don’t have to take any risks sending your phone away, and you will learn a thing or two about technology. I personally have very little, if any experience when it comes to technology (I confess, I even had to google the word “Digitizer”, which is the replacement screen word). Bracing myself, I gathered my broken phone, the replacement digitizer, and a tool kit and sat myself in front of the computer. Then, I found a useful YouTube tutorial and followed the step by step directions and had my phone looking as good as new within 30 minutes!

While being productive one late evening, I happened upon a video on the even more productive youtube. It was a baby trying to use a book as a touchscreen. It’s quite adorable, the frustrated baby has got his finger on the book and he’s attempting to use it, sliding his finger around and pressing imaginary buttons that refuse to respond.

Now babies aren’t ones trying to press buttons on things that aren’t actually pressable. A couple of friends and I were filling out forms. As it turns out, these forms are filled out electronically. We all made our way to the computers and started pressing the screen to fill out the forms. It took one of us geniuses to notice the keyboard below. Trying to unsmudge the screen, we all sheepishly filled out our forms, intent on pretending that we knew all along it wasn’t a touchscreen.

Now I AM going somewhere with these seemingly random tales . As technology advances, more things are being made with touch screens due to the fact that they are simpler to use. This also means that if you have a device with a touch screen, such as a Blackberry, iPad, or any touchscreen cell phone, if the screen is damaged, the  entire device is compromised until the screen is repaired. If that indeed was the cataclysmic case, you would need to get a replacement digitizer for your device. Now, luckily, it’s NOT the end of the world (Because those are probably the first words going through your head as you come to this realization) and you can DIY! All you need is a replacement digitizer, replacement tool kit, a directional DIY youtube video and Voila! You’re good to go ;) .

Kids these days are very easily adapting to the new technology. My two year old neice can work the iPad better than my mother. She can use her tiny, sticky fingers to beat my score at angry birds and also, make the screen look like someone used it as a plate.
