Stay Safe!

It was a brisk winter evening. The once fluffy, clean blanket of snow now resembled the blanket sheltering the woman who calls the park bench home. On my way to the bus stop after work, I heard several unusually long, loud honks to my right. Being a true New Yorker, I glanced in that direction, making sure to put on my fiercest glare for the culprit, the one that I usually only reserve for cars that nearly run me over. But what I never expected to see was my new friend Patty, waving at me through her open window as though her life depended on it.
“Molly! What are you doing here?” She was yelling and I was about a foot away from her.
“Um, I work around the corner. Patty we just had lunch three days ago. You came in to use the bathroom?” Just then a breeze rolled around the corner, making me shudder.
“Well what are you doing out there? Get inside, it’s freezing!” I heard the clicking of the doors unlocking.
More than happily, I obliged.
Not sure if it was the fact that I had gotten four hours of sleep the night before, or that I was suddenly swaddled in a cocoon of warmth, but I blissfully felt my eyelids suddenly making their downward descent.

“MARTHA!”
There goes that.
Patty was screeching into her iPhone in one hand, the other hand was fiddling with the GPS. Now I might not be the best driver, but I know you need at least one hand to work the steering wheel. I guess no one let Patty in on this secret because she had no hands on the wheel but had raised her knees to hold it in place. Fearing for both of our lives, I reached to take hold of the wheel. No - She motioned my hands away with her elbow.

“Don’t worry Molly, I’m an expert knee driver!” She said to me in between her conversation with someone named Martha and the exceedingly well-mannered GPS who was busy recalculating. Not comforted by her expert knee driving, I ignored her and moved the wheel left, only missing the car in the neighboring lane by a breath.
She finished fidgeting with the GPS and took hold of the wheel with one hand. Still trying to calm my racing heart, I closed my eyes and began to pray. My peace of mind would have to wait a little longer becuase Patty then decided she was in the mood for some music. Still on the phone with Martha, she was back to knee driving and I was back to panicking.
It was a lifetime before Patty dropped me off at my door, I thanked her and then, silently, whatever fate had allowed me to survive such conditions. As she peeled away, now on the phone with someone named Richard, I knelt to the beloved unmoving ground and kissed my front lawn.

Needless to say, for Patty’s birthday two weeks later, I got her an In-Car Speakerphone.
